Solution for Problem 5.3.1

Use synthetic division to determine if (x + 2) is a factor of
P
(x) = 2x
3 - x2 + 2x - 3
Put -2 in the upper left hand corner (box). Put the coefficients of the polynomial in the first row.

Solve

            Step

Bring the down the 2.

Use  -2 (in box) if  x + 2  = x - (-2) is the factor.
For x
- r , use r

Multiply 2 × -2 = -4

Add -1 + (-4) = -5

Multiply -5 × -2 = 10

Add 2 + 10 = 12

Multiply 12 × -2 = -24

Add -4 + (-24) = -28

Since there is a remainder of -28, then  (x + 2) is not a factor of the polynomial.
