Solution for Problem 1.1.3

Solve for x:   6(x – 1) + 4 = 2(4x + 1)

Solve

Step

6(x – 1) + 4 = 2(4x + 1) Original equation
  6x – 6 + 4 = 8x + 2 Distributive Property

  a(b c) = ab ac
         6x – 2 = 8x + 2
       -8x + 2   -8x + 2
       -2x + 0  =  0  + 4
Combine Like Terms
Subtract
8x , Add
      to both sides
              -2x = 4
                 x = -2
Divide both sides by -2

Check

If x = -2, then

6(-2 – 1) + 4 = 2(4(-2) + 1)

            6(-3) + 4 = 2(-8 + 1)
               -18 + 4 = 2(-7)
                     -14 = -14
